CLIC SEA™ — plastic-free barriers that adsorb hydrocarbons and heavy metals

The problem
Ports and marinas see small diesel and oil spills almost every day. Today's polypropylene booms are single-use plastic: once saturated, they end up as contaminated waste.
CLIC SEA does the same job with a biomaterial of keratin and plant fibres, free of fossil plastic, and with sensors that measure water quality.

CLIC SEA modular barriers
Modules that link together. Keratin adsorbs hydrocarbons, diesel and heavy metals and repels water. They replace single-use polypropylene booms. For small and large ports, marinas, boatyards, rivers and canals.
CLIC SEA Smart: the barrier with solar-powered sensors that measures water quality in real time. Data goes to the Clic Recycle app, with economic and environmental analysis, AI for impact, and blockchain traceability of the keratin.

Kit format: CLIC SEA Oil Spill Kit in boat
Rapid response to spills on water, on boats and on land. Keratin and plant fibres adsorb oils, hydrocarbons and heavy metals and repel water. Compact and portable, in a weatherproof cork bag: it fits in any boat's hold or on the dock.
Contents
- Adsorbent pads: for direct spills
- Adsorbent tubulars (socks): to contain spills and stop them spreading
- Adsorbent sheets: for larger surfaces
- Waste bags: to dispose of used adsorbents
- Instruction sheet: use, storage and disposal
Colours: navy blue or burgundy. Contact us for a tailored solution.
Technology: CLIC SEA Smart
The Smart version adds solar-powered IoT sensors to the barriers that measure water quality in real time.
Each project measures the parameters the client needs for its specific issue, and the data goes to the app and to dashboards per port and per client, with traceable impact reports.
As in all our solutions, the keratin is tracked with blockchain traceability from the salon to the barrier.
Proven in the water
Results: 4,320 kg of hydrocarbons removed in two years at the Port of Barcelona, about 120 kg per barrier. 95% hydrocarbon capture in lab and pilot tests, plus capture of microplastics over 300 µm and visible floating debris.
Advantages: no synthetic waste or microplastics, light and modular, deploys in under 30 minutes per section, easy to maintain and repair.
Port of Barcelona: in-water trials under the CLIC SEA project (2023–2025), funded by the Catalan Waste Agency (Agència de Residus de Catalunya).
Scientific validation: ICM-CSIC (Institute of Marine Sciences), University of Barcelona, UAB and Tecnocampus.
In use: barriers deployed with the Government of Malta.
Recognition: Solar Impulse Efficient Solution label and PCT patent WO/2025/093799.
A solution for every sector
Commercial and fishing ports: permanent barriers around docks, refuelling and unloading areas.
Marinas and yacht clubs: control of small daily spills between pontoons and at the fuel dock.
Boats and vessels: on-board spill kit for the bilge, engine and refuelling.
Boatyards and shipyards: containment during hull cleaning, painting and maintenance.
Rivers, canals and lakes: barriers for urban and industrial runoff and accidental spills.
Municipalities and beaches: protection of coastlines, river mouths and bathing areas.
Companies, CSR and education: CSR activities, workshops and exhibitions with CLIC SEA barriers.
